Now that Dan is getting into all this home improvement stuff too, I have to keep ahead of him and do more and more stuff every weekend.
Today I ripped out all the bathroom stuff in our upstairs bathroom, then went and looked at Contractor’s Warehouse for new cabinets, counter tops, etc. I have to say that this place is way better than the other big ones around here, in terms of selection and price for this kind of stuff. Plus they’re in my old “hood”!
After getting back from that, I got to work on putting in recessed lighting in the ceiling over where the corner of our couch is now, since it’s a little dark over there. I figured we need to do this before we put the floor in upstairs in our bedroom, since right now I can pull up the floorboards in our room to get access to the living room ceiling. I made the appropriate holes from above and put in all the wiring through the walls and ceiling (which I have to admit was much more of a pain than I was expecting, since the switch we want to use was wired to a wall outlet and I had to change that), so now all that’s left is to install the actual light units themselves and put in the dimmer switch in place of the current on/off one.
Of course, as Martha reminded me, we still haven’t finished the ceiling in the game room yet, but there’s only so much you can do in one day.

Awesome! Can’t wait to see the finished product. Pictures please or I guess I can come see it in person.
We will get pic as soon as we get the camera back. We share with Jac and Randy.
I did take a few crappy pictures on my cell phone, maybe I’ll upload those.
No more crappy pics from your cell phone, PLEASE.
So did you finish the bathroom or just rip everything out.
Something that we also wanted to do was not start a new project without finishing the previous because it will tend to just sit and not get done. I still have to put a new fan in the downstairs bathroom, and we haven’t even finished painting the upstairs bath.
H.I. is so cool.
The ceiling in the game room looks good, just clean it up just a little and your done.
Are you bagging on the quality of my other cell phone pics?
On the upstairs bathroom I just ripped everything out. We still need to buy the new stuff. We were just looking when we were at the store, since I’m not an impulsive buyer, but we’ll definitely be getting the stuff there, since it’s so much cheaper.
Ya, it kind of stinks starting another project while one is not done, but sometimes you have to do it that way. In the case of the recessed lighting, I had to do it before we put the flooring back down in our room, since I had to open up the floorboards to run the electricity, and it made it a lot easier to hang the lights too. The positive part is that sometimes doing short projects makes you feel like you’re making progress, since you’re finishing more things instead of waiting for one or two big things to be done before doing the next thing.
It might be cool, and I do like the occasional home improvement project, but when it starts feeling like you spend a good percentage of your “free” time doing it, it gets old really fast. After this weekend I am pretty sick of it. The only reason I force myself to do it is because I refuse to pay the outrageous prices that it costs to have someone else do it for you, even though I realize that in the end it would probably be worth it because my time is worth more, etc. etc. but I just can’t pay that much for something that I could potentially do myself, even though it’s a pain in the butt.
Yeah, I love the feeling of having the bathrooms and flooring “done” but you come to realize it’s really not. Like the baseboards and the stupid closet.
I understand too the ordering of projects because we only did the flooring now because of the heap of trash in our backyard. We rather add the carpet to it now rather then renting the can again.
If you had more space you could just keep hiding it around the back and sides of the house and look white trash for a lot longer. Like us.
or parse it over the course of months, adding just a few pieces per week to your trash barrel.
That doesn’t work too well for us, with this big of a volume of stuff to get rid of and the fact that our trash barrel is usually full every week already.
We usually either end up either getting a dumpster (which isn’t to bad, pricewise) or taking it in the middle of the night to various unlocked dumpsters around the city.
Shhh…that is our secret. Just don’t disclose our locations.
Yes, last time I actually found a really good spot which I’m pretty sure will always have a lot of room, so I’ll have to carefully guard that secret so it doesn’t become overused.
And it’s illegal
Depends on where you’re doing it; the place I’m thinking of isn’t actually a dumpster, and I’m pretty sure it isn’t actually illegal.
legality is decided by the courts. if there hasn’t been a ruling on your dumpster, it’s up for debate. that said, even if it’s legal, there could be liabilities involved and you could still get sued.
The place I’m referring to is open to the public and allows trash disposal in their receptacles, there’s just a lot of them and they aren’t used very frequently; nothing illegal going on.
I know where you are talking about, a public park doesn’t allow dumping. I think it’s posted, even the one way back in there.
Apparently you don’t know where I’m talking about, since the place I’m talking about isn’t anywhere near a park.
