Just thought I’d make a post out of part of my comment from this other thread, since it was going a bit off the original subject.
It’s in regards to a link that DaveZ posted about a Microsoft patent for a home video conferencing service.
The hardware in the current XBoxes is definitely enough to support it though, so I would’t have a hard time believing that they could roll this out fairly quickly. I’m actually kind of surprised that they haven’t done more in this regard so far. It might just be that it’s because they’re spread so thin in trying to cover so many markets.
Perhaps with the recent change in leadership they can better organize their company structure (or even split up) to allow for more rapid advances in this kind of space (home user appliance type stuff like gaming, “media center-ish stuff, and this). Seems like its a big opportunity that they’re kind of lagging on right now, and I’m speculating that it’s because they’re so focused on all the other stuff they’ve got going on.
Either that or they’re going to “pull an Apple and do a surprise announcement of a new product/service that’s already ready to go, which would probably be good for them PR wise.

They do state they will use an internet connection.
The bandwidth in Tv is above ethernet. I think it is in the 3-5 meg range, so there should be enough bandwidth for videoconferencing.
One smart thing is that they will use the home tv. Up to recently the standard home tv didn’t have the resolution required.
I don’t think they should let resolution hold them back, though; most people will be happy with what they can get out of their current equipment, unless they have such insane amounts of bandwidth that they want higher definition video.
We are currently getting 400p at rates as low as 128K. Videoconferencing today on 80’s tvs looks bad.
High Def is just coming in the biz video market but needs more bandwidth for a multisite call than most businesses can allocate. So it is more of a marketing buzzword than actuallity.
Did you ever get that MPAA picture?
Did you send it via e-mail? I’m still pretty backed up as far as that goes…
Yes, to your address from our church that you gave me awhile ago.
Looks like I did get it, thanks.
I’m always up for more of that certain kind of info you were giving us the other day though (which I won’t detail on here).
Oh yes that, we had a chance to go back into that office this tuesday and passed. The transport of Avid output over IP is not up to the quality they need. IF they wanted it as is, the plan was one system on the island and 1 in JJ’s ( look at the credits ) home and others. That would have been interesting to go to. Could still be a go this fall.
The MPAA picture is not that good, I plan to have a great camera with the next cell obtained.
And here I was trying not to give away any details…
