Here is a link to one of the best music videos I’ve seen, brought to my attention courtesy of my friend “the other Jared”.

Great imagery and content in Eminem’s latest video… Read the story here. Download / watch the video here. This just goes to show that even people you don’t particularly like or agree with all the time can have a lot to offer, if you take the time to listen.

“I don’t agree with the copyright laws and I don’t have a problem with people downloading the movie and sharing it with people as long as they’re not trying to make a profit off my labour. I would oppose that,” he said. “I do well enough already and I made this film because I want the world, to change. The more people who see it the better, so I’m happy this is happening.” - Michael Moore
Here is a download page that will only be up until Nov. 2
Not that you should agree with everything he says (or anyone else for that matter), but at least listen and make up your own mind instead of having some right-wing radio host spoon feed you your opinion. Read More »

Isn’t it weird how the smell of something can bring back memories so clearly? We went by the 7-11 on Bristol tonight, and the smell of the air conditioning system (or whatever it was that provided that unique scent) made me think about how I used to hang out there all the time in the evenings when I was in school, playing Street Fighter 2 for hours instead of doing homework.
By the way, the store is owned by different people now, and it seems to be worse overall, including the removal of arcade games. The old owner guy (Bob) and most of the workers there used to be really cool, and I was there so often that I kind of got to know them. Even after I had left for New Zealand and came back to the store years later, Bob still remembered me as soon as I walked in. Some of the younger people I hung out and played the game with and got to know really provided me a good perspective that challenged a lot of the stereotypes that culture applied (and still does) to members of gangs, poor or “bad” neighborhoods, etc.

I read an article today from Focus on the Family relating to the stem cell research issue. The main objection seems to be that there is the danger of a slippery slope towards justifying abortion. Some have even mentioned the possibility of women being paid to get pregnant and have an abortion so that the research could take place.

I think this is why they don’t let him do many press conferences:
SUNNYVALE, CA - Telling reporters and critics to ’stick to the issues that matter’, Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush declined to answer questions Monday concerning his alleged involvement in a 1984 Brownsville, TX, mass murder, in which 17 people were ritualistically murdered and skinned.
“I will not stoop to discussing that,” said Bush during a campaign stop at a Bay Area software-packaging plant. “We’ve got people across this country without health care, a broken educational system, taxes that are way too high, and all you want to talk about is something THAT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE HAPPENED 16 years ago? I’m sorry, but I find that offensive.”
WHAT??? “may or may not”??? Not that I’m saying he was involved, but a vehement denial would make me feel a little better than it “may or may not have happened”.

I realized today after being saturated with stories regarding the recent SNL controversy that there is a common thread that runs through that whole Britney/boy-band style that causes me not to like it. It’s not really even about whether or not they lip sync, but the fact that they could and it probably wouldn’t make much difference. Every word, note, gesture and dance move is so scripted that it becomes lifeless, and to me whether it’s a recording or their real voice doesn’t even matter. It’s so devoid of the kind of passion and honesty that makes music feel authentic, that it just comes off as watered down fluff.

Whichever U.S. candidate wins in the upcoming days, they will certainly have their hands full in the first month of their new term if all goes according to plan. The plan I’m referring to is the goal that the U.S. has put forward of having elections in Iraq at the end of January. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last couple years (or watching/listening to FOX news), you probably know that the Shiites are the majority of the Iraqi population, and are strongly opposed to the current occupation (and the U.S. in general, for the most part). This presents a dilemma for the U.S. which will probably overshadow all the other failings in Iraq thus far.
There are only a few things I can see happening, none of which could really be considered a good outcome. The U.S. could allow truly “free” democratic elections to be held, in which the majority rules, and there would then be a government in power who would probably demand that we release control of their country (resources, rebuilding contracts, etc.) to them. Would we comply, I wonder? Would we actually prevent the elections from being held to avoid this probable situation?
Either way, it will undermine the propaganda that we’ve pushed as our reason for being there. My prediction is that the spin machine will try to promote the concept that the Iraqi’s just need the opportunity to be truly free, which (between the lines) will mean free to be on our side. If we actually allow the elections to go forward and go along with the results that would almost certainly not be in our best interests, it would earn our government a great deal of respect in my eyes and I’m sure also those of our international neighbors. Here’s hoping…
