Fox 11 (LA) stinks

They moved Simpsons to 11:30 and put Current Affair at 11pm; now Simpsons conflicts with Letterman. Doh!

P.S. - Who the heck would ever watch those entertainment industry shows anyway?

Best response yet on this issue

In case you don’t follow the buzz in the world of blog development, there has been an interesting escalation of hype recently, following the discovery that the main WordPress site used a particularly “questionable” SEO practice (selling links that were positioned out of the normal user view to articles whose owners profit from the increase in traffic). The latest big development is that Google banned WordPress from their ranking algorithms.

All that to say, this is the best response I’ve seen yet on this issue: Ban Blogger sites!

Google is now faster in Firefox

See this Google blog entry, explaining that Google will instruct Firefox to download (”prefetch”) the best match in your search results before you click on it, so it will be there when you do.

See here for the technical details, if you’re interested in making your site faster on Mozilla-based browsers.

At long last

The winners of the WordPress blog theme competition have been announced, and I was not among them (although there are a couple of prizes that haven’t been awarded yet).

Oh, well; it was still fun. Judging from the “main” winners, I’m guessing the judges really like the common picture-at-the-top-of-the-same-old-basic-layout, with maybe changing some colors around every once in a while (but usually sticking with black text on white background). They also appear to have a “thing” with trains/tunnels which is kind of weird.

Man, that seemed kind of bitter; I didn’t mean in that way (or did I?). Anyway, all the themes are posted and will be available after the competition as well, so it will be interesting to see if I ever come across my own theme on someone else’s site at some point in the future. The downside is that since you can download them directly from the theme competition site, I won’t be able to look at the logs to have any idea of how many people are downloading it.

2 days

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged. I’ve just been busy; should have more (real) content for tomorrow.

Gates blows CES

when are you going to post on this?

[Note: I'm moving this comment by Nathan into a post, since I hadn't heard about it before, but it's so hilarious. It was perfect that Conan was there to poke fun at him. - JB]

Theme is updated

My entry in the theme competition is now updated on the site, to reflect the adjustments I mentioned previously.

There are 140 themes in total that made it in by the deadline (including Dan’s). I haven’t had a chance to look at the newest ones yet, but right now I think I stand a decent chance of winning something (there are quite a few different prizes).

Brain Dead

Washington D.C. (AP) — In the largest legal action of its kind to date, nearly 300 doctors in the Washington D.C. area have asked a federal court for permission to withdraw food, water and other forms of life support from their patients — all of them members of the House and Senate Republican caucuses.

In their brief, the doctors contend their patients have lapsed into a “persistent vegetative state,” and have shown “absolutely no signs of cognitive brain function” since September of 2001. All hopes for recovery are gone, they added.

Lawyers for family members of the afflicted Senators and Representatives asked the judge to reject the petition, saying the standard for withdrawing life support proposed by the doctors would permit the involuntary euthanization of almost 51% of the voting-age American population.

However, after reviewing the evidence — House and Senate voting records for the past four years — the judge agreed to take the matter under advisement.
