In case you don’t follow the buzz in the world of blog development, there has been an interesting escalation of hype recently, following the discovery that the main WordPress site used a particularly “questionable” SEO practice (selling links that were positioned out of the normal user view to articles whose owners profit from the increase in traffic). The latest big development is that Google banned WordPress from their ranking algorithms.
All that to say, this is the best response I’ve seen yet on this issue: Ban Blogger sites!
UPDATE: Matt’s response (he’s been away on vacation)
P.S. - In case you’re wondering, I don’t think Matt did anything wrong here at all. If I had as many incoming links as they do, I would at least seriously consider taking advantage of what is basically a loophole in search engine ranking systems. Considering the fact that it only works because links on pages with a high number of incoming links are given a higher priority, I would say that, according to the rules implied in their own algorithms, the site had “earned” the right to endorse whatever other pages they wanted to. Commercial sites do this all the time, the only difference here is the money is going to a good cause.

Except for certain ones, of course! (Don’t worry, I think most people still use Google anyway)
