Just sent off my first (and final) revision of the Oasis theme to the WP theme competition. It won’t be updated on the site until the submission deadline has passed, according to the rules, so don’t go look at it yet!

Matt Mullenweg and Jonas Luster have teamed up to form WordPress, Inc. - a company that will build WordPress based solutions for corporate entities. Good luck to them!
Amidst many accusations in the Shiavo case about it being all about money and convenience, I found an interesting quote regarding the money issue from the blog of Jonas Luster:
“This is a complex case with serious issues, but in extraordinary circumstances like this, it is wisest to always err on the side of life, says President Bush, who — in 1999 — signed a bill into law, which allowed the cessation of life support in Texas if, and hold on for this one, the patient can not afford to pay the bills of his or her medical measures and no sign of recovery is found.

Looks like he may not have to have the “final” surgery at all now; we are going to wait and see how/whether the most recent discoveries progress over time.
He will still have to go in next week to do clean-up type work, but the small intestine replacement technique is on hold until (when/if) it’s verified to be necessary.
See the entry in Martha’s blog for the full scoop.

My entry is now publicly included in the WordPress theme competition! Go check it out and browse some of the other good themes. As I expected, some really good looking ones are starting to come in as the deadline approaches. May the best theme win!
There were a couple of mess-ups on my part, the first one being that I forgot how long the list of themes was for the theme picker, so it pushes the rest of the sidebar content down. I need to either move the theme switcher to the bottom of the sidebar or use the drop-down version to avoid that giant list of theme links, which looks kind of bad.

IE6 is the new Netscape 4.7x - by Jeff Atwood
It’s like we woke up one day, and IE6 had transformed overnight into the browser that we all wish would go away. The one that’s a pain in the ass to support. The source of all those unfortunate CSS hacks and JavaScript if..then blocks. The browser with all the oh-so-clever derogatory names you get when the crowd has turned on you. And it was so .. sudden. Somehow the IE7 announcement, which should be a glimmer of hope– remember, we were told there would be no new development of Internet Explorer whatsoever until the next major version of Windows (Longhorn) was released– is, paradoxically, making the situation worse.
I really hope the IE7 team can pull circa-2001 IE6 out of the accelerating death spiral that it seems to be mired in. I guess that’s what you get when you inexplicably stop development for more than three years on a product that is integral to the user experience of millions of users on a daily basis. That’s possibly the ultimate WTF.

Finally polished up and packaged the Oasis theme for submission to the WP theme competition.
There are now over 60 themes posted on the competition site, with many more in the “pending” stage, no doubt (as mine currently is - there is a 24 hour delay policy). I went through tonight and looked at them all, primarily just to make sure that no one’s was too similar to mine, even though I created it entirely from scratch myself. I’m happy to say that not only did I not find any remotely similar themes, I also still (personally) prefer mine to any of the others entered so far. Of course, I’m biased, but I do think I at least stand a chance. Wish me luck!
Maybe now I can get back to posting more regularly…
