Batman Begins

I just realized I never posted my review on this movie (see Nathan’s and Dan’s for more info).

Short summary: by far the best Batman adaptation ever (TV or movie). The original Tim Burton one was OK, but it should have been called “the Joker” as that was really the main good thing about it.

The casting in this one was perfect. I don’t think there’s ever been a better Bruce Wayne or Batman characterization. The rest of the cast (Kane, Freeman, Liam Neeson, the Scarecrow guy, and even Katie Holmes) were excellent as well. This movie I think is on par with Spider-man in terms of great casting.

Technical details (such as costumes, sets, etc.) were all excellent, although it isn’t hard to improve over the bat-nipple costumes in the recent films. (Although this movie was not without nipples itself, but I digress). I did think they could have zoomed out a little bit on a lot of the fight scenes; I think they tried to give you the feeling of confusion with all the close-up fight coverage, but I’d rather just actually see what’s going on.

There were, of course, both logical flaws and minor inconsistencies from the original comic plots, but, as I’ve said before, I don’t mind those at all in a good movie. The only time the differences between the movie and the comic really bothered me in a comic movie was the first X-Men movie. Certainly nothing to prevent the movie from being enjoyed, however.

I will however, stop short of saying that it was the best comic adaptation movie that I have seen. Although it is certainly my favorite, I would have to say the best would still be Spider-man 1, in terms of general audience appeal. (Also, I’m not counting some like Sin City or Constantine, since I haven’t seen them, but I think my general audience point would still apply there).

Anyway, go see it, if only to get the memory of the other Bat-movies out of your head.

My new home page

I know, it’s another bookmark type post, and I think someone else may have posted about this a while ago, but I forgot about it until now.

One of my favorite sites

Don’t worry, I’m not going to start posting my bookmarks or anything, but I noticed I hadn’t done a tech post in a while, so I wanted to share this link to the CSS Zen Garden for any web people who somehow haven’t seen it yet, and remind everyone that all web devs who use tables for layout control should be fired.

Sidebar thoughts

I am coming to the realization that I have way to much stuff in my sidebar. It might be time to move to a 3 column layout, as well as cut some stuff out.

I am already planning on moving the links out to their own page, so they aren’t on every page (even though you can collapse them, as long as your browser supports javascript).

Any other suggestions?

This is a good season to experience it. (Summary and details).

Downloading TV shows

I’m moving this discussion to a post to facilitate more conversation.

Dave Z: Re: 30 days. I think you can catch a repeat of it, check your cable schedule. We should watch it together/at the same time and take notes for a online discussion “.

JB: I already downloaded it yesterday within about an hour of noticing that I missed it. Thanks to bittorent!

Dave Z: I dont understand why you dont think it’s wrong to use copyrighted material without permission, am I missing something? I know I have used material.

JB: By downloading a show that was on TV, it’s no different than if I had recorded it on my VCR (or Tivo) when it was on. It’s not like I would have payed them money either way.

Of course, the downloaded copies usually don’t have commercials, but when you record the show you usually skip those anyway. I’m sure the ridiculous DMCA has something to say about it, but then again the people behind it would also want to prevent you from doing things like recording shows on your own VCR/DVR, fast-forwarding, etc.

What does everyone think?

Trivia

Question: Why were audio CDs made to hold approximately 72 minutes of audio?

First correct answer gets…. well, I can’t think of anything at the moment.

‘Patriot’ Act may get partially declawed - by Thomas C Greene

The US House of Representatives passed a measure curtailing the federal government’s access to library and book shop records by a 238-187 vote on Wednesday.

US Representative Bernie Sanders (Independent, Vermont) sponsored an amendment to the House Justice Subcommittee appropriations bill. The amendment prevents the US Department of Justice (DoJ) from using appropriated funds to obtain library patrons’ and book shoppers’ records without a search warrant, a practice previously allowed under Section 215 of the so-called “Patriot” Act.

“No question; this is a real shot in the arm for those of us who want to make changes to the USA Patriot Act,” Sanders noted. He added that the vote would “rein in an Administration intent on chipping away at the very civil liberties that define us as a nation.”
