Quick podcast test

Since at some point I’m going to be working on some WordPress podcasting software, I thought I’d start posting some audio every now and then, just to get a feel for how the WP system deals with it.

If you’re generally interested in the stuff I write about on here, you may like to listen to these, so feel free to subscribe using your podcasting software of choice, and every once in a while you may hear something you like.

Entry for today: Paul Graham on Great Hackers

    hey ha ha,
    JB–
” In my mind proper spelling and grammar do go a long way in a debate, except of course in the minds of the people that use poor spelling and grammar. Especially in a written forum such as this, your points or opinions can be dramatically weakened by poor presentation.

Well written statements indicate that someone has at least taken the time to care about what they’re saying, “…

(NOTE: Since I corrected it already, Dave was referring to my misspelling of “Quick” in the title; I forgot to spell check it initially and it said “Qucik” - sometimes I type too fast for my own good.)

That’s OK since it’s not relevant to my previous comment that you quoted, which was in reference to debates. This is a quick test post, so it’s completely different.

Not only is the context different, but the error itself is different: this was an obvious typing error (misplacement of the correct letters), whereas a lot of other errors I have seen (on this blog, by people who will remain nameless since I’m a nice guy) are actual failed attempts at correct spelling, and (more commonly) grammatical errors that are not “typos”.

That being said, I really don’t think you want to get into a spelling / grammar correction match here. I am usually pretty good at refraining from bringing it up when I see them (which is often), because I don’t want to be a jerk about it.

  4. Posted July 18, 2005 at 5:39 pm | Permalink

It’s always easier to spot others grammer/spelling errors. For me anyways.

I didn’t use any podcasting software, but I did use your bandwidth to download the talk.

Very enjoyable too, Paul Grahm is great.

You might want to change your permalink, to get rid of all the evidence.

You going to submit your cast to iTunes?

  7. Posted July 18, 2005 at 8:01 pm | Permalink

No, because I don’t plan on doing it regularly, just every now and then. It’s mostly so that I can test the new podcast software whenever I get around to making it.

yea Dan, usually typos are, I think, a result of fast typing and not going back to check.

can’t listen as I can’t use itunes on the soho pc and our laptop is too busy…

  9. Posted July 19, 2005 at 9:20 am | Permalink

You don’t need iTunes to listen, or even to subscribe to podcasts. You can always just click the link to download it directly, or use one of the many podcasting client applications that have been out for a long time before iTunes finally jumped on the bandwagon (although I’m sure some people will call it “innovation”) :)

  14. Posted July 19, 2005 at 11:20 am | Permalink

I’m not sure what you mean by that, but I suspect you’re just trying to bump up your comment count, so I’ll adjust the name on the first one so it doesn’t count.

  15. DaveZ1
    Posted July 19, 2005 at 11:31 am | Permalink

please adjust it if you want to, the first comment was before I was able to download it and play it that’s all, nothing nefarious

  16. Posted July 19, 2005 at 11:34 am | Permalink

But why post a comment that just says “great” if you’re already planning on posting one when the download finishes, when you could just wait till it finishes and then post “great, I have downloaded it.”?

  17. DaveZ1
    Posted July 19, 2005 at 11:55 am | Permalink

I wasn’t planning on it. I wasn’t sure if I could right then, it just happened to work out.
I didn’t finish file. It is specific info not related to my interest and time usage algorithms.
I think I have burned up enough of my time and your valuable time on this.

  20. Posted July 19, 2005 at 4:22 pm | Permalink

I am glad that the only thing Dave can win at is typing and clicking submit.

  21. Posted July 19, 2005 at 4:31 pm | Permalink

I don’t know if “far exceeded” is necessarily appropriate for a difference of 18 out of almost 400.

Anyway, Dan you better watch out - Dave is out to get you!

But seriously, let’s not take the top commenters count too overboard. I may have to remove it! (Oops, was that negative?)

    That’s why I hide mine. ;D

    Jakarta huh?

  23. Posted July 19, 2005 at 5:40 pm | Permalink

Oh yeah, and you know you can seperate out a podcast rss feed through categories.

The feed URL would be http://www.freepressblog.org/wp-rss2.php?cat=3. You can also use wp-atom.php?cat=3.

  24. Posted July 19, 2005 at 5:43 pm | Permalink

We need to get a podcast going. You, Nathan, and I.

Maybe Dave can call up and ask questions.

    It seems so easy now-a-days.

  25. Posted July 19, 2005 at 10:12 pm | Permalink

I knew about the category thing, but there’s not much point in that unless I want to start offering multiple podcasts with separate feeds. I figure it’s better (at least for what I’ll be doing) to just use the main feed link, so that way it will automatically catch any linked media files without me having to tag (or categorize) them specifically to indicate that they’re “podcasts”.

As for getting our own podcast going, I’m all for it. Let’s pick a day and get started.

    Re: Podcasting -Sounds interesting.
I don’t wish to talk about politics as I get too involved.
    Re: Comment count
It is an important index. Not as important for some. Considering I took off almost 5 months from commenting and still very high on the list is downright amazing. If I don’t say so myself.
However, with the exclusion of my commenting on political posts my count position should not increase as much but hold more steadily in the standings.
Dan really gets involved in the tech discussions and N is consistent. So we will see how it plays out.

Dave, the podcast would have very little (if any) political content, I think.

I find it very hard to believe that you took 5 months off of commenting. I will have to check my database and verify that.

  35. Posted July 20, 2005 at 5:30 pm | Permalink

Dave, your longest period of time between comments (by far) on this blog alone was between 1/30 and 3/15, so I’m not sure it’s very accurate to refer to a month and a half as “almost 5 months”. :)
