Just for Dan

I added some descriptions to the flickr photos from my computer closet post earlier. I still doubt anyone really cares, but I guess it’s a good idea just in case someone is interested.

This morning’s project

Blog overload

Man, I’ve spent WAY too much time typing on here tonight.

Maybe I should sell out and give some ad space to wacko leftist lame-slogan t-shirt manufacturers to make up for my time and expenses. (ahem… Powerline…)

Since I’m uploading photos

Computer closet

Here’s a shot of my recently converted computer closet. I did this a while ago, but didn’t get around to posting the pictures until now. I ran the cables in and installed outlets, and a big fan in the top wall (that you can’t see in these pictures) that goes out to the garage to keep everything cool when the door is shut. In phase 2 I will put in more shelves and tidy everything up.

Going gray

Going gray

Martha said she saw some grey in my beard the other day, and tried to take a picture to prove it. Maybe it’s just the low quality of the phone on my camera, but I don’t see it. I shaved to prevent further examination of the evidence, though.

Speaking of podcasts…

Phil Gordon is doing a podcast as he plays the 2005 World Series of Poker, including interviews with fellow players, and commentary in between levels about how he’s playing and where he screwed up. Check it out if you’re into that sort of thing.

Down with PR blogs

and corporate podcasts too.

Russell Beattie explains what’s wrong with this type marketing trying to masquerade as “personal opinion”.

Speaking of tagging

Someday I need to go back and finish tagging my old posts, so that the tag cloud above is accurate.

Real Journalism

Just heard an interview with Amy Goodman in which she recounted a very interesting story that illustrates just how valuable independent media sources are in our system. (See link for full transcript)

This story describes how she took a call on election day in 2000, from then president Clinton, who was calling around to ask people to get out and vote. She took the opportunity to ask him a series of hard-hitting questions that the mainstream media would never dare ask, for fear of losing the rare access they are granted to administration officials (even rarer these days).

Although the president was at least willing to stay on the line and answer the questions, she was called the next day and told that she was banned from the white house from that point forward, because she didn’t ask the right questions.

Short update on FF

I don’t have time to do a lengthy review on this right now, but I liked it. Dan and I saw it Friday night and then I took the kids the next day. (Side note: $10.25 for just me for the Friday night show, versus $12.50 for me and the 3 kids on Saturday at the Santa Paula theater).

Short summary: if you didn’t like many of the other recent comic movies, you probably won’t like this, but if you did you may. Has a lot of the same general audience feel as Spider-man 1, but probably without as much popular appeal (and a lot less marketing). The casting was actually very good (I was worried about a couple of them), with the possible exception of Dr. Doom. There were (as always) significant differences from the original stories, but none that wrecked the story.
