I’ve got this plugin I wrote a while ago that automatically tags my posts as I type them if the post contains keywords related to the tags (no, I haven’t released this one for the public yet).
After posting that last article about WM5, and then looking at the “tag cloud” above, I realized I need to cut way back on the number of tags I’m using, and also finish going back and tagging old posts so that it’s somewhat useful.

Or you could use a better plugin and limit the amount of tags displayed above.
I know you rather have your tags use the cat tables but there are some real advantages with the separation.
Nah, the one I did does everything I want it to (with maybe one planned upgrade), I just need to cut down on the overall number of tags, because I kind of went overboard at the beginning.
Does the tag plugin you mention automatically add tags for you as you type the post?
I know you prefer the separation of categories vs. tags, but I don’t think I need or want both.
It doesn’t enter tags as you post, maybe that is why you have so many. But it does link up to that tag suggestion service and then you just click the ones you want if you don’t know what you want to tag your post with, I never use it.
