My short Christmas list

So far the only item on it is the Hauppauge PVR 350, the foundation of a good MythTV system.

Not that I necessarily expect anyone to buy this for me, but I’m going to force myself to wait until after Christmas anyway, at which point I will get it one way or another.

Get a Tivo, it’s cheaper, smaller and you can’t burn DVDs.

Not being able to burn DVDs is a positive thing? The main reason I’m avoiding Tivo (and all the others, including the one I already have from the cable co) is that they don’t record to standard formats. MythTV does, and will allow burning DVDs / VCDs, etc.

I really don’t think Tivos are cheaper either, when you consider paying for the service. You can get this card for just over $100, and I already have all the other components laying around in spare computers. Tivo’s current offer (for $49) on their site requires you to pay $150 for a year of service. In addition, you could get a cheaper card for MythTV too, but this one gives you more functionality.

As for the Tivo being smaller, I don’t care too much about that when there are so many advantages that make up for the size, and I’ll probably have it in the closet anyway so I don’t really care how big it is.

But the most important reason of all: I can continue to enjoy ongoing upgrades by an open source development community, and not have to worry about what new DRM crap Tivo will be bundling with their next upgrade.
