The new apprentice

I just watched the opening credits of the new Apprentice show, and it lists their “team names” in the credits. “Gold Rush” wasn’t great, but I think everyone on whatever team chose the name “Synergy Corporation” should be fired right off the bat just for their choice of names.

Why, oh why

are there no haircut places open after 5pm on a Sunday? Don’t they know that some people are too busy to go any other time, and often put off getting haircuts for months longer than they should?

Death Valley 2006

In memory of Malcolm X

Malcolm X was assassinated 41 years ago today in Harlem. While I don’t necessarily share all of his opinions regarding the methods that should be used to fight racism, I do think he was a valuable and significant figure in the civil rights movement. I thought I’d put up some excerpts from some of his speeches that I find interesting.

Whether you are a Christian or a Muslim or a Nationalist, we all have the same problem. They don’t hang you because you’re a Baptist; they hang you ’cause you’re black. They don’t attack me because I’m a Muslim; they attack me ’cause I’m black. They attack all of us for the same reason; all of us catch hell from the same enemy. We’re all in the same bag, in the same boat. We suffer political oppression, economic exploitation, and social degradation, all of them from the same enemy. The government has failed us; you can’t deny that. Anytime you live in the twentieth century, and you walkin’ around here singing “We Shall Overcome,â€? the government has failed us.

And once we see that all these other sources to which we’ve turned have failed, we stop turning to them and turn to ourselves. We need a self-help program, a do-it-yourself philosophy, a do-it-right-now philosophy, a it’s-already-too- late philosophy. This is what you and I need to get with, and the only time — the only way we are going to solve our problem is with a self-help program. Before we can get a self-help program started, we have to have a self-help philosophy.

Once you change your philosophy, you change your thought pattern. Once you change your thought pattern, you change your attitude. Once you change your attitude, it changes your behavior pattern, and then you go on into some action. As long as you got a sit-down philosophy, you’ll have a sit-down thought pattern, and as long as you think that old sit-down thought, you’ll be in some kind of sit-down action. They’ll have you sitting in everywhere. It’s not so good to refer to what you’re going to do as a sit-in. That right there castrates you. Right there it brings you down. What — What goes with it? What — Think of the image of someone sitting. An old woman can sit. An old man can sit. A chump can sit. A coward can sit. Anything can sit. Well, you and I been sitting long enough, and it’s time today for us to start doing some standing and some fighting to back that up.

America is just as much a colonial power as England ever was. America is just as much a colonial power as France ever was. In fact, America is more so a colonial power than they, because she’s a hypocritical colonial power behind it.

What is 20th — what do you call second-class citizenship? Why, that’s colonization. Second-class citizenship is nothing but 20th century slavery. How you gonna tell me you’re a second-class citizen? They don’t have second-class citizenship in any other government on this earth. They just have slaves and people who are free. Well, this country is a hypocrite. They try and make you think they set you free by calling you a second-class citizen. No, you’re nothing but a 20th century slave.

When this country here was first being founded there were 13 colonies. The — The whites were colonized. They were fed up with this taxation without representation, so some of them stood up and said “liberty or death.â€? Though I went to a white school over here in Mason, Michigan, the white man made the mistake of letting me read his history books. He made the mistake of teaching me that Patrick Henry was a patriot, and George Washington, wasn’t nothing non-violent about old Pat or George Washington.

Liberty or death was what brought about the freedom of whites in this country from the English. They didn’t care about the odds. Why they faced the wrath of the entire British Empire. And in those days they used to say that the British Empire was so vast and so powerful when the sun — the sun would never set on them. This is how big it was, yet these 13 little, scrawny states, tired of taxation without representation, tired of being exploited and oppressed and degraded, told that big British Empire “liberty or death.â€?

And here you have 22 million Afro-American black people today catching more hell than Patrick Henry ever saw. And I’m — I’m here to tell you in case you don’t know it — that you got a new — you got a new generation of black people in this country who don’t care anything whatsoever about odds. They don’t want to hear you old Uncle Tom handkerchief heads talking about the odds. No. This is a new generation. If they’re gonna draft these young black men and send them over to Korea or South Vietnam to face 800 million Chinese — if you’re not afraid of those odds, you shouldn’t be afraid of these odds.

Why is America — Why does this loom to be such an explosive political year? Because this is the year of politics. This is the year when all of the white politicians are going to come into the Negro community. You never see them until election time. You can’t find them until election time. They’re going to come in with false promises, and as they make these false promises they’re gonna feed our frustrations and this will only serve to make matters worse.

I’m no politician. I’m not even a student of politics. I’m not a Republican, nor a Democrat, nor an American, and got sense enough to know it. I’m one of the 22 million black victims of the Democrats, one of the 22 million black victims of the Republicans, and one of the 22 million black victims of Americanism. And when I speak, I don’t speak as a Democrat, or a Republican, *nor an American.* I speak as a victim of America’s so-called democracy. You and I have never seen democracy; all we’ve seen is hypocrisy. When we open our eyes today and look around America, we see America not through the eyes of someone who have — who has enjoyed the fruits of Americanism, we see America through the eyes of someone who has been the victim of Americanism. We don’t see any American dream; we’ve experienced only the American nightmare. We haven’t benefited from America’s democracy; we’ve only suffered from America’s hypocrisy. And the generation that’s coming up now can see it and are not afraid to say it.

Best George Lucas quote ever

George today, in a rare moment of political commentary:

“Because the emperor works behind Darth Vader; he doesn’t actually stand in front of him. I say that in fear of getting hit with a lot of buckshot.”

I always wondered if some of the political maneuvering in the eps #1-3 (one and two, especially) was inspired by current events, or if it was just my imagination making the association, but I guess there was a hint of inspiration there after all.

Driving by Chuck E Cheese

Emma: Dad, can we go to Chuck E Cheese sometime and you can win me a bunch of tickets?
Riley: Yeah, me too!
Christian: I’m a man, I can win my own tickets.

Don’t forget to keep being afraid!

From the LA Times

Employees in and around the U.S. Bank Tower reacted with concern, confusion and skepticism to President Bush’s reference this morning to a terrorist threat four years ago against the high-rise building.

Later today, National Homeland Security Adviser Frances Townsend said it was the “analytic judgment” of the U.S. intelligence community that the building, then known as the Library Tower, was the target because the alleged plotters mentioned the tallest building on the West Coast. The alleged plotters were arrested in early 2002 on other charges.

Employees who work in the building, on 5th Street between Flower and Hope, said they hadn’t heard about a possible attack and were a little disturbed to find out about it years after it could have happened.

Other downtown employees saw the new details as a political move by Bush to “keep us living in fear” and garner support for the war on terrorism.

“It’s a travesty…. I mean, we’ve caught him lying so many times,” said Mark Lea, who works at a major law firm in the Wells Fargo building next door. “He’s only doing this to draw up support for his domestic spying.”

Patrick Grover, who works on the tower’s 2nd floor, agreed.

“I’m not alarmed [by the threats],” Grover said. “I’m alarmed that they’re exploiting it years later.”

Grover called Bush’s announcement “malarkey,” criticizing the president for supposedly setting up a “smokescreen” now that the administration’s spying policies are under attack.

Exactly. Sometimes I feel like I should just keep reposting this earlier post from 2004

The business/blogging relationship

This post is in response to Dan’s recent conversation with the Star on the subject of business and blogging. In response to Jenn’s question regarding other types of business, I think the aid that blogging can provide in a business context really depends a lot on the type of business you’re in.

Dan highlights some unique advantages in regards to promoting web design / site building, but for other types of business the main advantages would probably come from the content of the posts themselves.

What I mean by that is whether people who read your blog get the sense that you are an intelligent, capable (+ whatever other qualities they are looking for) person that they would be interested in doing business with. This is one aspect that I believe applies to any type of business.

I consider myself a very good programmer, but I also fully acknowledge that a great deal of my perceived value from the people I do projects for comes not (strictly) from the software I produce for them, because most business people are not capable of analyzing the technical details involved. What they care the most about is how well you meet their needs, and that includes your communications with them in addition to the actual work you do, even down to whether they like you as a person or not.

This is one reason why I disagree with the school of thought that says that things like spelling/grammar etc. don’t matter on blogs. Whether they matter to you or not, they will matter to others who are considering paying you to do something for them. You may say that a blog should be a more casual, separate environment, and that when it comes to real work you are capable of communicating more professionally, and that may well be true. However, most people who are considering hiring you will either not be aware of your position on the subject and judge your writing as-is, or even if you do spell out your position so that every reader will clearly see it, there will still probably be few who will take the risk of hiring you and waiting to see if it’s really true or not.

The other aspect of this (and one that I have struggled with) is how “controversial” your personal opinions on various subjects are. Due to the nature of blogging, the author often reveals their opinions on various subjects which they feel strongly about, and some of these may occasionally stir up some tension in those who may disagree. In light of the relationship to prospective business, this can be an issue as well for potential employers, but I believe it’s different than the spelling and grammar one. I think that most professional people (or businesses) will not discriminate against a qualified person strictly on the basis of their personal points of view on a given issue. Even if they disagree, most people are able to recognize that there is a normal separation when it comes to work and personal life. Assuming that you don’t communicate your opinions in a negative or insulting way, I personally think that it won’t steer very many people away in the professional sense. For those who would make such things a factor in choosing who they employ, you probably don’t really want to work for them anyway.

Speaking of being careful not to step on toes, there is a trend of “corporate blogging” that has evolved over the last few years. Initially, there were several cases of people being fired for talking about work related matters (without permission), and now the pendulum has swung to the point where some employees of large organizations are “authorized” to represent their company in their blog posts. Personally, I’m not a big fan of this, since I feel that blogs should be a more uncensored, personal expression that could really be tainted by the added expectation of being a PR front for the employer.

I think the bottom of the barrel has now been seen in the recent emergence of “fake” blogs where companies posing as individual customers will give reviews of products, etc. as a form of advertisement disguised as honest personal opinion.

Lost prediction

Here is a guess/prediction on my part about the episode airing tonight.

This isn’t really a spoiler since it was in the commercial for this week’s episode, so I’ll say that this is based on Sun getting taken from her garden, and then being carried back out of the jungle later.

Where my theory comes into play is on what happens between that time (which isn’t shown, but also isn’t a spoiler since I’m totally making this part up). First off, I should mention that I currently believe that there are (at least) two “camps” of “others”: the boat people that took Walt (including “Zeke”), and the “nature lover” people (the ones with the brown rags on, that we see just the shot of their feet as they’re walking through when Eko was watching). Anyway, my wild guess is that the boat others grab Sun and then as they’re getting away with her in the jungle they get scared off by one or more of the “nature” others, who let her be returned to camp.

I don’t really have anything to back this up, just a hunch based on other information, so we’ll see.
