i have a lost prediciton: in the end they’ll reveal that it’s just a tv show.
I don’t see how that would be a surprise to anyone, since most people do watch it on their TVs…
Sure there are a lot of people out there going to great lengths to uncover the mysteries behind the story, but I don’t think that’s too abnormal for a very well written and thought out sci-fi/mystery story, which is exactly what this is.
The only difference is that instead of being in a book form (which relatively few people as a % of the population would take the time to read) it’s on TV, so it’s a lot easier for people to get into. Therefore, there are a lot more people discussing it. This is one of the main reasons (IMHO) that I think the show is such a hit, because there really aren’t any other TV shows out there that are doing this kind of good extended storyline. (I added the “good” qualifier since soap operas do have extended plots as well, but they are a different genre of story, and I’m guessing aren’t written or directed this well).
Of course, this is also the downfall of the show (the only negative, in my opinion): because it is such a story as would be told in a good book, you can’t just pick it up and start in on chapter 8. Luckily the previous videos are available in various forms, so it’s easy for those who want to start in on it to do so, but it does require a bit of time. Personally, I never watched it until the end of season one, after hearing so many good things about it but figuring it was all hype. Then I caught one rerun ep on TV, and it did interest me, so I went back and downloaded everything and eventually caught up, but it definitely took me a while, and it’s only going to take longer for new viewers to get up to speed as the episodes pile up. I’m in the process of making my own personal DVD sets of all the eps so far, so that I can quickly loan them out to friends who want to catch up, but that’s about all I can think of to do.
Like anything with this type of following in the age of the Internet, there are people who will end up overanalyzing every little detail, “uncovering” parts of the story that were not even really there, but that’s part of what makes it fun, and why we started the blog about it - to discuss all the crackpot theories and come up with some of our own.
keep trying to convince yourself the obsession is normal.
haha, that’s probably the best nathan-smart-ass-comment to jared-wordy-reply ratio yet!
There’s a difference between appreciation / enjoyment and obsession. Both of you guys would probably like it too, if you got into it.
They’ll say they don’t have time and they rather do something productive but their really just too lazy.
i freely admit i’m too lazy!
I would but I don’t have the time and would rather do other more productive things. Oh yeah, and I’m too lazy to watch TV.
jinx
Uh, I’m pretty certain you guys all watch way more TV than I do, even Nate if you include sports.
yeah, and you want me to add on to that a whole other hour a week? plus the 24+ hours of catch up time. “bye lisa, i have to watch a tv show all day saturday! have fun!”
I won’t try to talk anyone into it, I’m just noting that I think you guys would probably like it, probably enough to bump 40 minutes of some other show off your list.
Without the commercials, the episodes are only 40 minutes, and you could easily space them out over many days/weeks until you catch up. That’s what I did; I didn’t even start until after the first season was over, and I didn’t do it all in one day. If you’ve got them digitally, you could even watch them on lunch breaks, etc.
PS - if anyone’s considering getting into it, it’s probably best to not read the other blog we started up, unless you don’t mind spoilers.
Nathan: With you being sick all the time it shouldn’t be a problem for you to catch up and the more you push it aside the more you will have to catch up so you might as well.
look, i’m not falling for this again. in a year, none of you will care…i’m still bitter that no one talks about twin peaks anymore.
Lost will be around a lot longer than Twin Peaks. I never watched it, but I’m pretty sure that it was never as popular (ratings-wise) as Lost. I’ve heard good things about it, though.
Correction: it already has lasted longer. I’d still like to check it out sometime though. Anyone have it on DVD?
it’s lasted longer because twin peaks had a start, middle, and end, whereas lost had a start, and then episode after episode of the writers making you think something is happening in the background while they cash in on the popularity. eventually the audience will die off as nothing continues to happen and the series will get cancelled.
Nope! In fact, the characteristics you describe apply much more to Twin Peaks than to Lost. David Lynch has stated that it was his original intention to never reveal Laura Palmer’s killer, and drag the show on for a long time, but they ended up getting pressured by the network to make the reveal in the second season, and then having to cancel it shortly thereafter due to low ratings. I diagnose your prediction as transference - a little bit of projecting from a disappointed fan, perhaps?
I’ll grant you that eventually the same thing may well happen to Lost, but the creators of the show have clearly stated that they do have a complete plot outlined, and there is a predetermined end that will be told when the time comes. Of course, they will keep it going for as long as they can, and they may even decide to change the ending as the story progresses, but they were ready to wrap it up more quickly than they would have liked to if this season hadn’t done so well.
Personally, I’m hoping that they’ll finish it up in a couple more seasons, and then start over with a similar type show, just a whole new setting, cast, and backstory.
But, if you’d watch they show, you would see that there are definitely things continually happening and keeping the show very fresh. I’m not sure where you got the idea that nothing was happening, but I think most people who actually watch it would certainly disagree.
you haven’t noticed that i’m just making stuff up? how old was i when twin peaks was on? 12 maybe?
You never know, there were probably some 12 year old Twin Peaks fans at the time…
yeah! like me!
