Relaxing weekend

No home improvement for this weekend, or even anything overly techie - just a day at the beach on Saturday and hanging out over at Dan & Sara’s and then Randy & Jacquie’s today.

It was especially fun watching Christian win $20 from Dan on that Geometry Wars game. Speaking of that game, there’s a pretty good clone called Grid Wars for those who don’t have an X-Box 360, and it’s a pretty good substitute for the original.

Going green

Being partially inspired by that movie last night, and partially by the desire to lose more weight, I’ve decided to ride my bike on the days that I don’t have to go into the office, which is most of the time these days.

Today was the first day, and it went pretty well, other than having a bit of a sore butt after not being used to riding for a while. Also, the backpack I have that has a laptop pocket in it is not big enough to zip up with my oversize laptop screen, but it was nothing a good bungee cord couldn’t fix.

Rewriting for licensing

Now I’m thinking of rewriting the last parts of my tagboard plugin that are held over from the original one that I based it on, so that I can release it under the GPL instead of the license it has now, but then again I’ve got so many other side projects on the backburner that I’m not sure that it’s worth it.

Ready for a free movie

An Inconvenient Truth - tonight @9:35, downtown - free thanks to this site.

Thanks to Nathan for the link. Dan is in too, I believe.

Anyone else?

E-mail addresses on blogs

A while back I posted the alternate e-mail address I used when signing up for netflix, in order to let people know where to send their friend invitations.

Well, it looks like the screen scraper spammers have been hard at work, because ever since that post I’ve been getting a steady stream of e-mails from “paypal”, “amazon”, etc. asking me to “update my account” (meaning give them my password), along with the other usual spam-like messages.

Luckily, I only use this particular address for netflix, so I can just have my spam filter trash any messages to that address that don’t come from netflix, which is why I did it that way.

New Plugins / Widgets

The following WordPress plugins / widgets that I’ve been working on are now ready for initial distribution.

See the descriptions at the following pages for more information:

I recommend using these with the “widgets” plugin, which will allow you just to drop these components in and configure them (arrange them in your sidebar, set various parameters, etc.) without editing any code.

All of these plugins have been tested both in WordPress 2.x and WordPress MU.

Enjoy!

Stained

Well, as you can clearly tell by this post, I’m not making a whole lot of progress on my goal I mentioned in the last post.

The good news is, however, that I did manage to finish staining the ceiling in the game room today (although it ended up taking a lot longer than expected), and my headache seems to be gone. The bad news is that I now wreak of paint thinner, which was required in liberal doses to unstain my body after I was done, and my headache has been replaced with a neck-ache that I’m much more sure is attributable to the staining work.

Oh, well, at least it’s over now. Well, actually not quite; I still have to put up the modling around the edges before Wednesday, since that is when I agreed to have the whole thing done by. Speaking of that, everyone’s welcome over to our house that night for “common meal” (sharing dinner for those not clued into the hip lingo). Check Martha’s blog or the b web site for the details like what kind of food we’re having.

Bedtime

I’m sitting here wondering why I have had a bad headache since earlier tonight, but instead of going to bed I came home and got on my computer here.

I will correct that now, and go to bed, but the headache might have something to do with the fact that this will be the earliest I have gone to bed in quite a while. I need to get better at that.

At least that’s what I’m hoping the headache is from, because otherwise it might be from when I was staining the ceiling this afternoon. I hope it’s not that, because I’m planning to do that even more tomorrow to finish it up.

Balanced spam fighting

As I mentioned before, I’m using Akismet as a plugin in my Spam Karma 2 setup, so that it is included as one of several (each partially effective) lines of defense that (when combined) tend to catch most of the spam pretty well.

However, the more I check through my logs, the more surprised I am by how much spam Akismet says is OK, and that OK weighting has to be balanced out by the other spam checks that are luckily still effective.

It occurred to me that Akismet is a part of my “well balanced” spam fighting solution in much the same way that Chocolate Coco Puffs are “part of a well balanced breakfast”, where when you look at the picture of the well balanced breakfast, there’s a whole bunch of stuff that’s actually good for you along side the bowl of cereal that has no nutritional value.

Scared

I’m not sure what frightened me more tonight - my horrible poker playing or reading these statistics on Jason’s blog.
