Time zone issues

I wish WordPress (and all other software, for that matter) would store dates / times in UTC in the database, rather than having an option to set your time zone and then working with all times based on that preference.

What are malls coming to?

I took Christian and Riley to the mall tonight, and it struck me that since they lost the book store there, I think there’s now only one store in the entire mall that has anything that interests me (Radio Shack).

Browser shots

This is pretty cool. Now I can check out how my pages look in Safari.

Name that costume

This is my costume for this year. I tried it out tonight at a birthday party, and it had the desired effect (creeping people out).

Anyone know what it is, before I say it?

Firefox 2

My favorite highlights so far:

  • Integrated spell checking: Don’t need an extension for this anymore, and it’s always good to trim down the extension list
  • Integrated RSS feed recognition and subscription, integrated with Google Reader: Previous versions had rudimentary feed support, but nothing like it is now, which is pretty much exactly how I’d like it. It will allow you to use Google Reader as your feed manager rather than their built-in one (which I didn’t really like), and once you’ve set that preference, you can just click on any feed link and it will ask you if you want to subscribe to it in Google Reader.
  • The cake that the IE dev team sent to the Mozilla dev team, congratulating them for their release.

Presidential prejudice

With the recent comments made by Barack Obama regarding considering running in the 2008 race, and the constant speculation about Hillary Clinton running and Rice on the Republican side possibly being interested at some point, it makes me consider an interesting (and very unfortunate) question.

It’s my opinion that American society has unfortunately not progressed to the level that the sex or race of a presidential candidate would not be a factor (and a negative one, at that, if they are anything other than an old white guy).

I guess the real questions (assuming you’d acknowledge / agree that some segments of the American population would never vote for a woman or a non-white man in a presidential election) are what should the party (Democrats, in this case) do in light of that? Should they play it safe and not endorse these as their leading candidates, since they would be guaranteeing themselves lost votes, or should they be brave and promote the most qualified candidate, even if they happen to fit into one of these categories?

Netflix - who needs it?

This post on Jason’s blog got me thinking about how I’ve had my current Netflix rental sitting at home for almost a whole month and still haven’t watched it - they are really loving me as a customer.

Why? Because I’ve got a continually growing backlog of stuff I want to watch that’s ready to go, whenever I find / make the time to watch something, but that list is growing a lot faster than I’m knocking stuff off of it. I haven’t even watched last night’s Lost episode yet, which I think is the first time I haven’t seen the episode the same day it aired since I started watching the show (mid season 2).

I have a feeling that I could easily go without having Netflix at all, but it is still nice to have when an occasional movie reference pops up and reminds me of something I want to see, and it’s just so convenient. I think for now I might clear out my queue and give my spot to either Martha or the kids’ queues, until I find something I really want to see again.

Google Reader ups their web 2.0 cred

An entry this week on the Google Reader blog describes their latest improvements to the software, and includes this helpful meter for judging their hipness factor:

Still feeling secure?

Sure, all these added “security measures” like dumping out fluids at airports and the larger general disregard of privacy and constitutional rights are a real pain, but at least people can’t fly airplanes into tall buildings in New York anymore.

Oh, wait, they still can.

Luckily this one wasn’t piloted by people who actually intended to do some damage, because if it were, it could have easily been loaded with quite a lot of explosives and there isn’t a thing we could have done to stop it. Unfortunately, I think that point will continue to be lost on those who favor the loss of liberty for the sake of perceived security, as the saying goes.

Happy B-Day Christian!
