Today’s xkcd comic is funny but also proposes an interesting idea.
If your schedule is flexible enough, you could structure your sleeping in varying patterns to allow you the perception of extra time in each day without losing sleep.

wow, you’re only burning 52 days a year with that system! and getting an hour less sleep than if you slept 8 hours each night…
no, two hours less!
Not if you consider your “days” to be 28 hours instead of 24, hence the title.
yeah, but my point is you get fewer of them a year. much fewer…
But you get more awake hours and if you have sleeping issues maybe better rest as well.
Yeah, it’s all a trade off. Of course, you aren’t actually gaining (or losing, for that matter) any time, you’re just using it differently and in a way that might be more efficient, depending on your preferences.
Yeah, it only works out for loners who don’t care to be alone or loose out with family/friends when they sleep in late or go to bed early. That’s why I only do this on the weekend.
think of how healthy you’ll be once you’re sitting their awake, alone, in the dark at 4am on sunday - wednesday!
Well, it’s certainly not for everyone, but for some people it could be very productive.
The gym is open. You could workout then.
