I think learning from existing patterns can be very useful in building creativity, as long as you don't get stuck copying them, but move on to improving on (and beyond) them. My kids think it's pretty cool, and so do I. I can only assume that you're bagging on the design of the site, but for me (in most cases and <em>especially</em> this one), it's all about the content.
