Cloverfield…

… was very good.

Don’t read the rest of this if you don’t want a few mild spoilers as to what might happen in the movie.

You’ve been warned…

OK, so I really liked almost everything about the movie.

One of my favorite aspects was how they, in keeping with the single perspective of the story, felt no need to reveal any information about the cause of what was going on (I won’t say more than that in case anyone read too far in spite of my warning).

Usually in the type of movie where that type of thing is present, there’s at least the token scene of exposition from some scientist or government official giving some degree of insight into the situation that a normal person would otherwise never have into what’s really going on. To really portray the chaos that was going on, it’s a lot more realistic to see that everyone is pretty much scared out of their minds and is much more focused on living a few more minutes rather than doing much in depth analysis.

My only gripe about the movie is (and even here, I’ll try to avoid the spoiler-ish aspect as much as possible) there is a caption at the very beginning that explains where the tape was found that gutted the suspense from several scenes throughout in the film, because you knew that certain attempts that the characters were making were not going to be successful, just based on that. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend not reading the text in the introduction, at least if you’re familiar with the layout of Manhattan at all. You won’t miss anything by not reading it, it’s OK.

he’s used to working in a format where you never have to resolve anything because the show just gets canceled eventually. so i assume it will end with a big cliff hanger, right?

i’m not really interested in watching the movie, but i am interested in knowing what the monster is, so i was bummed that with that big spoiler warning, you didn’t reveal anything!

I wouldn’t agree with that initial statement. Both this movie and shows like Lost (although there are certainly differences) have a definite, predetermined ending.
No cliff hanger in the movie, that’s for sure.

The ending was another part that I really appreciated, since it wrapped up the story being told without needing to wrap up everything else going on around the story. This next statement is a spoiler, but you don’t find out whether the final measures the government was taking even worked, but that’s OK because that isn’t what the story is really about.

I’m sure everything else you might want to know about the details can be found online.

In that case, let me put it this way: if you’re a monster movie fan, this is a must see.
