Phoneless

Well, I’m not really without a phone, but I have had to revert back to my old one since the charger plug on my current phone broke. Good thing I kept it around. It really makes me realize how much I used (and now miss) all the cool features of my current phone, though.

The main parts that are difficult to adjust to are not having really usable internet access on the device, the lack of “power-user” media playback capabilities, and various other benefits to having a computer that you can install your own apps on with you at all times.

The Symbian phone I went back to using does have IMAP e-mail and basic web browsing, but it’s nowhere near the same as what I had on my HTC.

The media playback thing is a big one, since I listen to a lot of podcasts (including radio shows released as podcasts). I’ve had to resort to using a cheapo MP3 player just to get by with listening to stuff, but it’s nowhere near the same. The biggest thing I miss in that regard involves functionality when dealing with large files.

It seems like a pretty small thing, initially, but when some podcasts are over an hour (sometimes even two), it is pretty important to be able to (1) turn off the player and come back later and automatically pick back up right where you were, AND (2) also be able to skip to an arbitrary point within a given file (using the touch screen), without having to fast forward or rewind to get there.

There’s lots of other stuff like the sleep timer, etc. that are nice to haves as well - probably too many to mention in this post.

Before anyone suggests an iPhone as a suitable replacement on both counts, let me say that I’ve used it (along with pretty much every other “high-end” phone device), and while it probably has the best browser on the market, for overall internet capability I still prefer the phone I had for the unlimited capabilities it provided that are noticeably lacking in every other platform I’ve seen.

Same goes for the media playback capabilities, actually. The particular software I was using on my phone has all the features of the iPod plus a whole lot more, several of which I found quite useful.

I don’t want to turn this into an anti-Apple post (or anti-anything, really), so I’ll stop there; all that was just to say that my eventual replacement will most likely be an HTC device, based on my experiences up until this point.

I am, however, going to be waiting a while to see how things play out - give Android a little time to take off, etc. I’d love to go with OpenMoko too, but I don’t think it’s going to be “ready enough” soon enough for me.

Incredible photos

Unforgettable Photos - from Dismal World.

Wow.

Speaking of photos

I just got around to uploading 391 pictures off our camera today, dating back to October 2006.

Some sets include (in chronological order): Christian’s birthday party, soccer games, Halloween, Pierson Brooks’ shower, Thanksgiving, the b Christmas party, Gingerbread house prep and other Christmas stuff, Disneyland trip, our snow day earlier this month, and this weekend’s hike. Finally caught up… haven’t tagged any of the new ones yet, but that would take too long.

So, if you think any of them may be embarrassing pictures of you and you need to check so you can ask me to remove them, or if they just sound interesting to you, go take a look!

Name that costume

This is my costume for this year. I tried it out tonight at a birthday party, and it had the desired effect (creeping people out).

Anyone know what it is, before I say it?

Backyard - phase 1

Actually, it’s more like phase 20, but it makes you feel a lot less behind if you restart the numbering on each smaller part of the project. This one in particular involves removing the ditch from our backyard, and covering where it used to be, along with any sections that are currently plain-dirt, with grass.

We got a start on it yesterday, when Randy came over and we busted up all the concrete gutters along the ditch, which was a lot more work than I estimated it being. We rented a jackhammer, because that concrete was pretty thick, and it turned out to be even more challenging because it was reinforced inside with metal rebar.

We took turns, with one person doing the jackhammering and one person picking up the pieces and carting them off in the wheelbarrow. Actually, Randy ended up doing most (75-80%) of the jackhammering, while I mostly did the clearing duty, because of Randy’s mad jackhammering skills. And by “jackhammering skills”, I mean that Randy’s in better shape than me. (Well, that and he actually has done it as part of his profession).

I started stacking all the pieces along the front west side fence, but quickly realized that there was going to be way more debris than would safely fit there, so I ended up piling the rest back behind the retaining wall behind the house.

It was quite a pain, but it is good to be done with it. Now I just have to rest up and recover for the next part of the project - leveling everything out and getting ready for the grass. Actually, the next step is to convince Dan and Nathan not to keep doing stuff that reminds Martha that our stuff isn’t done yet…

Camping pictures are up

Over on Randy & Kristi’s Flickr account. I guess we still have to try to rescue ours from our drowned camera’s card; but maybe Martha already did.

UPDATE: More at Jacqiue’s Flickr account too.

Side note: for some reason those Blogger feeds never seem to update in my feed reader (Rojo). They work fine in other ones, but I am still using Rojo primarily for right now.

The cruise was great… more to say later, but for now you can see the pictures.

I set up a Flickr group that we will all be adding our photos to.

Moving pictures followup

Randy and Kristi posted a whole bunch of flickr photos recently, and now you can see the follow up pictures to this post, including the one shot of Nick hanging down behind the dryer by his feet to hook it up, where Randy stuck the camera back in there and you can see him looking back up.

That one’s in the moving set, but they’ve got a whole bunch more up too.

Moving day (or weekend, actually)

Today we helped Randy and Kristi move into their new place, and I had to post these photos I took on my phone of a particularly amusing moment.

The washer and dryer hookups are inside a closet that happens to leave no room to maneuver around the side to actually hook up everything.

As you can see from these pictures, what we ended up having to do was hanging Nick in over the narrow opening on top of the dryer (which was stacked on the washer), and having him dangle down the back and make the connections for the gas, vent, etc.

Hopefully Randy will post the pics he got on his camera to his Flickr account soon, partially because they will be better quality than these from my phone, and partially because he got one where he stuck the camera back in there and got a shot of Nick hanging upside down looking back up at the camera.
